The Comanche Nation Homecoming Powwow is held annually in Walters, Oklahoma in mid-July. Both the Northern Shoshone and Bannock languages are members of the Numic branch of the Uto-Aztecan language family. Today, the Comanche Nation has 15,191 members, with approximately 7,763 members residing in tribal jurisdictional area around the Lawton, Fort Sill, and surrounding areas of southwest Oklahoma. They also took thousands of captives from the Spanish, Mexican and American settlers. According to some reports, they nearly wiped out the Apache people. Their later territory to the south overlapped with several other tribes, whom they drove out through war. Along with fellow Comanche Nation tribal members, CLPG facilitators attended the 2018 Shoshone Language Reunion on July 23-25 on the Southern Ute Reservation in Ignacio, Colorado. Although the two languages remain closely related, some low-level sound changes prevent them from understanding each other. They speak an Uto-Aztecan language that is still the same as spoken by the Shoshone people of today. It is closely related to the Shoshone language, from which the Comanche branched off around 1700. They were the dominant tribe on the Southern Plains and often took captives from weaker tribes during warfare, selling them as slaves to the Spanish and later Mexican settlers.
